White Wines
Bohigas 'X' Xarel-lo
Catalunya, Spain, 2018
The wine has aromas and flavors of bright lemon, green apple, fresh herbs and spices. It is light-bodied with apple undertones and a fruity finish. The grape Xarel-lo is not unknown to us wine geeks, but we are much more accustomed to seeing it as a background element in blended Spanish wines, especially in the sparkling wines of Cava. This however is a delicious example of the grape as the main focus of a non-bubbly wine, one of the few of this grape we've encountered. For more than 6 centuries the Bohigas family has been growing vines and managing their own vineyards with over 150 hectares. The vineyards a very well situated to grow white varieties as they get lots of sunshine but the evenings are very cool retaining the freshness in the wines. Fans of Sauvignon Blanc or Italian white wines will definitely find a lot to like in this wine!

Indaba Chenin Blanc
Western Cape, South Africa,2020
One of the grapes most closely associated with South African wine is Chenin Blanc, where it is often also called ‘Steen’. This fresh, easy-drinking version offers vibrant flavors of honeyed pear, golden delicious apple, and luscious tropical fruit. The finish shows light honeysuckle hints and green almond accents. Pairing beautifully with sushi, shellfish, roasted vegetables as well as sweet and sour flavors such as pad thai, you can get creative in the kitchen with Chenin (and even add some to your food!) by employing the assistance of spices such as tikka masala and cheeses such as herbed goat cheese and Humboldt Fog.

Castellano Pinot Grigio
Venezie, Italy, 2020
If there were a dictionary entry for the phrase ‘well made Pinot Grigio’ it would be a picture of a bottle of Castellano. While Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are wines made of the same grape, there are definite stylistic differences. The style in which Pinot Grigio is typically made is so distinctive that Gris and Grigio are often treated as different varieties, even though they have identical DNA. The Italian Grigio style, successfully adopted in the US and to a lesser extent Australia, is achieved by harvesting the grapes relatively early. This helps retain the naturally high acidity of the grape, and stainless steel fermentation maintains a freshness and liveliness. Castellano is produced in the northern region of Veneto in Cazzano di Tramigia, where wines have been produced since the 12th century. Clean yellow in the glass with lime green hints, it has excellent body and structure for its price. The flavor is fresh, with long lasting notes of apple and citrus fruits. A patio pounder for sure, but will also hold up to a nice cajun catfish filet, or a lemon kale salad with garlic and parmesan.

Domaine du Prince Blanc
Costières de Nîmes, France, 2019
Some of our favorite white wines to sip during Fall weather are the lovely white wines made in France's Rhone Valley. These are whites that often have a full, round weight on the palate, giving them some substance and texture. Made of 60% Grenache Blanc, 20% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, three of the traditional white grapes of the southern Rhone valley, the Domaine du Prince is an excellent example. It has a mouthfeel that is almost plump, with warm fruit tones of peach, quince, and yellow apple. The weight and fruit of the wine are kept in check by a nice touch of wet stone minerality and just enough acidity on the finish. This wine would work wonders with a pork tenderloin with an apricot ginger glaze, or with lentils and carrots in Indian spices.

Gorghi Tondi Zibibbo
Sicily, Italy, 2021
Sicily is the home of our new favorite white wine of Summer. This certified organic wine is made of 100% Zibibbo, from vineyards named Coste a Preola on the western side of Sicily near the Mediterranean Sea. Zibibbo is a grape known in other areas as Muscat of Alexandria, but don’t confuse this wine with its sweet cousins, as this version is vinified fully dry. The Gorghi Tondi is an excellent introduction to the Zibibbo, with straw yellow color and greenish reflections. The nose is elegant and intense, with notes of almond, apricot, orange blossom and sage. On the palate it is fragrant and lively, with fresh acidity keeping the finish lithe and zesty, and great flavors of apricot, grapefruit and green tea accents. Excellent with Roasted Oysers or a Yankee Lobster Roll, also could pair well with Chicken Pot Pie or creamy pasta dishes.

Borgo Moncalvo 'Ellipsis' Vino Bianco
Loazzolo DOC, Piedmont, Italy, 2019
This lovely Italian white is 100% Muscato (Muscat). Those of you who think that means this will be a sweet wine can just hold your horses for a minute! While Muscato is the classic grape of famous dessert wines like Moscato d'Asti, it is not sweet all the time, and this is a wonderful dry example, which is not sweet in the least bit. Certified organic, it is a vibrantly aromatic wine with loads of aromas of honeysuckle, lychee and orange blossom. The wine's vibrant nose is aided by a method called Vinooxygen, patented by the Elegir family who own the winery. Their method allows them to carry out the full vinification without exposing the juice to oxygen. Their process gives them absolute control of the oxygen throughout, which allows them to keep intense aromatics, and can reduce sulfites up to 70%, without compromising the longevity of the wine. Juicy flavors of stone fruit, honeydew, kiwi and mint deliver a juicy, refreshing palate and come off almost weightless on the long, spicy finish. This wine would work with a variety of foods, from basil pesto pork chops to steamed mussels in Thai red curry, or paprika chicken
with a creamy feta sauce.

Crossbarn Chardonnay
Sonoma Coast, California, 2020
Crossbarn is a second label for renowned winemaker Paul Hobbs, who makes some of California’s most elegant Chardonnay. Named after the one hundred fifty year old ‘cross barn’ located on the Hobbs family farm in upstate New York, Crossbarn honors the values of hard work and integrity instilled in Paul from his childhood. With a commitment to sustainably nurturing the vineyards, while using labor-intensive winemaking techniques, Crossbarn wines offer a pure and youthful expression of fruit blended from diverse vineyards within the Sonoma Coast appellation.
“The 2020 Chardonnay has a detailed, pretty perfume of white peaches and quince, with touches of lemongrass, green herbs and white flowers. The medium-bodied palate is satiny and fragrant, with a supporting streak of fresh acidity, and there's a touch of phenolic texture that draws out
the long finish.”

M*A*N Family Wines Syrah
Coastal Region, South Africa, 2019
MAN Family Wines was started by three friends with deep family histories in South African viticulture. They wanted a project making the kind of wines they liked to drink. They weren't looking for rockstar bottles that cost a fortune, they were wine geeks in need of everyday wines. So they started making them! They took the first initial from each of their wive's names, and MAN Family Wines was born. Their Syrah comes from bush-vine and trellised vineyards in the Agter-Paarl region. It was hand harvested, fermented in stainless steel, and then matured for 12 months in older American oak barrels. It has aromas of dark berry, cured meats, and star anise. The palate has mouth-filling blackcurrant and plum flavors with finely integrated tannins. Small additions of Mourvèdre and Grenache add soft red fruit and fine spice characters. This layered, medium bodied Syrah will complement slow-cooked stews, curry and any type of barbeque.

Ripe black cherry and cedar aromas combine on the nose, with a touch of vanilla oak in the background. It is richly flavored with black currant and black cherry accents, with mild tones of smoke and mint. It is velvety and soft yet
intense on the palate, with lingering berry flavors.

This is fermented in stainless steel and then barrel aged in French and American oak to add a nice richness and balance. Picked at the peak of ripeness, this shows off dark fruits of blackberry, blueberry and hints of cranberry. Black pepper, cedar, warm spices and toast vanilla notes come out after a touch of air. La Maialina 'Gertrude' Red Blend
Tuscany, Italy, 2018
45% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot
Gertrude has been our best selling Italian Red for at least 3 years now. This blend is what we might call a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. The term Super-Tuscan was coined by journalists in the 1970’s to describe a handful of wines from Tuscany that were using non-traditional grapes. Due to the grapes used, these wines could only be called ‘Table Wines’ according to Italian wine laws, although their quality was far above normal table wine levels. The classic Super-Tuscans now cost hundreds of dollars a bottle, which is why we call this charming affordable blend a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. This wine offers remarkable value for the complex flavors it delivers. A bright acidity supports robust flavors of grilled meat, fennel, spice, black cherry, dark chocolate and tobacco into a satisfying, lengthy finish.

Tarima Hill Monastrell
Alicante, Spain, 2017
This wine is known to deliver way more than expected for the price in every year, but the 2017 exceeded even those normal heights. 100% old vine Monastrell, (known in France as Mourvedre), it is a beautiful expression of the grape, and got rave reviews from some of the major wine publications:
"This bold red features a thick, rich texture, with ripe, heady flavors of currant and blackberry preserves, backed by cocoa, espresso and loamy earth notes. Muscular tannins are well-integrated, with enough orange peel acidity to keep this lively. Harmonious, in a full-throttle style."
~ 92 Points, The Wine Spectator
“Aromas of ripe cherry, boysenberry, anise and pungent flowers, along with a hint of vanilla. Sappy, broad and well-concentrated, offering plush black and blue fruit flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Smoothly plays power off energy and finishes long and sappy, displaying sneaky tannins and an echoing vanilla note.”

Domaine du Fournier Côtes du Rhône Villages Signargues
Rhone Valley, France, 2016
In the classification of Rhone Valley wines, the Villages level stils between the generic Côtes du Rhône title and location-specific cru wines such as Gigondas or Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This beauty from Domaine du Fournier is a single vineyard wine coming out of the Signargues region in the far south of the Rhone Valley. It is predominantly Syrah, at 70%, with 30% Grenache making up the rest of the blend. It's a muscular, full-bodied Rhone wine perfect for the winter's chill. Blackberry and plum flavors are densely concentrated, along with warming accents of dried sage and mint framed by soft, plush tannins. The finish is moderately long, with a nice touch of cinnamon and bramble at the end. Try this with Swiss Chard sauteed with Dried Apricots and Pine Nuts, or for the meat eaters search out a nice Venison Loin, and do seared medallions with Blackberry Sauce.

Lacroix Bordeaux Supérieur
Bordeaux, France, 2018
While there are many revered Bordeaux wines out there, the lion's share sell for quite high prices, and it is always a daunting task to find a value oriented Bordeaux of quality. We've really been thrilled with how well we did finding this one, and it really over-delivers for the money. It is a classic blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Cabernet France. It has elegance and structure, but also drinkability. Dark current and black cherry aromas mingle with scents of graphite, loamy earth and leather. It is medium-bodied, with some heft but not overwhelming, and flavors of cherry, mocha, cassis, and earthy supple tannins on the finish. Wonderful with Prime Rib or Leg of Lamb, it would also work very well with Smoky Blue Cheese or a Sharp Cheddar.

Guerrieri Rizzardi 'Pojega' Ripasso Classico Superiore
Valpolicella Ripasso DOC, Veneto, Italy, 2018
This great Ripasso was a favorite of 2021, and we are excited to finally have it back in stock. So what is a Ripasso? It is one of several iterations of the classic Valpolicella blend of the Veneto region of Italy, based mostly on the grapes Covina, Corvinone, and Rondinella. Standard Valpolicella is classic easy-going Italian table red, while the region's most famous wines are of the Amarone style, where the grapes are dried out for weeks before pressing, and create wines of intense richness, complexity and depth, and usually high prices as well. Ripasso, meaning 're-passing', sit squarely between the other two, as the pressed skins of the Amarone grapes are used in conjunction with traditional winemaking to add color, tannins, and complexity to give some of the accents of Amarone without the big price stickers. Guerrieri Rizzardi's Ripasso comes from the Pojega single vineyard which dates back to the 17th century. 'Superiore' means it was aged at least one year, usually in oak; 'Classico' means the grapes were grown in the Classico region known for high quality fruit. This Valpolicella skillfully combines the fruitiness and the aromatic richness of the traditional wine, enhanced by the Ripasso process, with a well-proportioned body and extraordinary finesse. It shows lots of spiced cherry and raspberry accents, complemented by sweet mint. It is silky-smooth, lifted by cooling acidity and focused herbal tones, with tart wild berry fruits and salty minerals, with a dry and youthful finish.

Raats 'Dolomite' Cabernet Franc
Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2019
In his Dolomite series, Winemaker Bruwer Raats’ fascination for, and dedication to the identification of the perfect vineyards sites inspired a range of wines named after the soil type on which the best grapes are grown. Individually crafted from unique vineyard parcels, his Cabernet Franc expresses great purity of fruit and balanced elegance.
“The 2019 Cabernet Franc Dolomite has an energetic, tensile nose of wonderfully defined red and black fruit, sage, bell pepper and clove aromas. The palate is very well balanced, taut and fresh, with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a harmonious, sophisticated finish and suggestions of black pepper on the aftertaste. This is a brilliant Cabernet Franc from Raats that will age gloriously.”
