Sparkling Wines
Sokol Blosser 'Bluebird Cuvée'
Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2018
This is the second vintage of Sparkling Wine from one of our favorite wineries, and we’ve been fans since the very first sip. Based all on white grapes, with Chardonnay in the largest percentage, the wine is made following the Méthode Traditionelle process. A classic Brut style, it expresses aromatics of apple blossom, lychee, and hints of white peach. The mouthfeel is bright and vibrant with notes of just ripe pear and lime zest. Dry on the palate, it finishes crisp with a lingering mineral flavor.

Sicily, Italy, 2019
This is a smooth, dry white from Western Sicily, where the long hours of hot sun lend a little extra body to a variety more familiar from the Veneto region further north. In spite of the southern heat, the alcohol by volume is kept to a modest 12%, making this a great choice for parties and other get-togethers where quantity is required as well as quality, and its peachy, citrusy character, with a snappy, crisp finish, will please a discerning crowd.

Poderi del Nespoli Famoso
Emilia Romagna, Italy, 2019
Famoso means 'famous' in Italian, an odd name for a grape that as recently as 20 years ago was nearly extinct even in its indigenous area of Emilia Romagna. While mentioned in documents as far back as 1437, by the late 19th century its plantings had fallen into decline, and by 2000 all that was left was two rows of vines in Mercato Saraceno, northeast of Florence. But the discovery of these two rows inspired a band of local wine producers with a passion for indigenous grape varieties to experiment with the vines, the wine and to join together to save the variety. They liked the grape’s toughness, the wine’s distinctive floral aroma and light acidity, saw its potential for producing a top-quality white wine. Poderi del Nespoli shows the great bounty of their hard work! Led by aromas of jasmine and orange blossoms, it is rich with tropical and white fruit scents and flavors. It has intense fruit flavors of peach, apricot, and green apple with a fresh, clean and balanced acidity, and a long lasting, aromatic finish. This white wine shines with Asian cuisines and anything with a bit of spice to it.

Domaine Duffour Blanc
Côtes de Gascogne, France, 2019
This blend of Colombard, Gros Manseng, and Ugni Blanc from the Gascogne region has become a customer favorite, and understandably so. In the glass, the Domaine Duffour is a pale lemon-yellow color with a crisp, clean appearance and pleasantly round viscosity for a white wine. On the nose and palate, there are immediate fresh notes of Key lime pie, lemon rind, citrus grove, crushed white fruit, stone fruit and chalky minerals. Cotes de Gascogne is the IGP title for wines that are produced in an area centered on the Gers administrative department of South-West France. The countryside here is verdant, and the low rolling terrain is interspersed with small, picturesque villages. All in all, this is well suited to viticulture, as the soils and climate work together across the area to create an optimal environment for vineyards.

Bordeaux, France, 2019
This Bordeaux Blanc may be the best value in the entire store! A blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, it perfectly pairs the classic citrus, grass, and stony minerality of classic Bordeaux Blanc. Lively aromas of fresh herbs, minerals, figs, and orange peel jump out of the glass. This wine is clean, juicy and penetrating, yet quite supple, with ripe citrus and fig notes adding to its complex nature. It exhibits a wonderful balance as well as very good flavor intensity and length. This has been one of our best selling, most popular wines of the last ten years. Elegance like this is hard to find even in wines more expensive than this. This is a classic pairing to fish like Cod or Halibut with Beurre Blanc, or Lobster Ravioli in Cream Sauce with English peas, or with your favorite sushi roll, especially if it has Yellowtail and Avocado.

Bohigas 'X' Xarel-lo
Catalunya, Spain, 2018
The wine has aromas and flavors of bright lemon, green apple, fresh herbs and spices. It is light-bodied with apple undertones and a fruity finish. The grape Xarel-lo is not unknown to us wine geeks, but we are much more accustomed to seeing it as a background element in blended Spanish wines, especially in the sparkling wines of Cava. This however is a delicious example of the grape as the main focus of a non-bubbly wine, one of the few of this grape we've encountered. For more than 6 centuries the Bohigas family has been growing vines and managing their own vineyards with over 150 hectares. The vineyards a very well situated to grow white varieties as they get lots of sunshine but the evenings are very cool retaining the freshness in the wines. Fans of Sauvignon Blanc or Italian white wines will definitely find a lot
to like in this wine!

Sancerre is one of the world’s ultimate expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, grown in vineyards that are closer to Burgundy than they are to most of the other top areas of the Loire Valley. The wines are citrusy, bright and intense, but not as grassy as New Zealand SBs, nor as weighty as California examples. The JM Roger is a blend of some of the finest Sancerre terroirs. All the classic flavors are there though, with grapefruit, lime zest, and mineral notes up front being backed up by a touch of flint and smoke.

One wine that we seem to always be on the hunt for is the great, everyday California Cab, one that balances affordability and quality, yet still tasting truly of Cabernet Sauvignon and not just like ‘red wine’. Broadbent Douro Red
Douro Valley, Portugal, 2019
One of our favorite finds of last Fall was the Broadbent Dao White, so we were thrilled to start working with its companion Douro Valley Red blend this year! A classic Portuguese dry red blend, this is made up of native Douro Valley grapes Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca. It is an amazing value for its price, and easily one of the most elegant $15 wines we’ve had in quite some time. Dark purple in color, it has a nose of fresh blackberry, dark cherry, black plum and blueberry, with secondary notes of violets, purple lilacs, cracked pepper and dried herbs. On the palate it is a wine of medium body with pleasant acidity, fresh dark fruit, medium tannin, and a fruit driven finish. Great with pork chops, stews, or whatever type of braised meat you’ve had in your Instapot all day. But be forewarned - if you open one of these to sip while you cook, you very well may need a second bottle to have with the meal!

La Maialina 'Gertrude' Red Blend
Tuscany, Italy, 2018
45% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot
Gertrude has been our best selling Italian Red for at least 3 years now. This blend is what we might call a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. The term Super-Tuscan was coined by journalists in the 1970’s to describe a handful of wines from Tuscany that were using non-traditional grapes. Due to the grapes used, these wines could only be called ‘Table Wines’ according to Italian wine laws, although their quality was far above normal table wine levels. The classic Super-Tuscans now cost hundreds of dollars a bottle, which is why we call this charming affordable blend a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. This wine offers remarkable value for the complex flavors it delivers. A bright acidity supports robust flavors of grilled meat, fennel, spice, black cherry, dark chocolate and
tobacco into a satisfying, lengthy finish.

Soldier's Block Shiraz
Victoria, Australia, 2019
This Shiraz is sourced from ancient Victorian soils in order to achieve a wine with greater finesse, purity and structure as well as typical eucalyptus flavors and saline finish associated with the wines of this area. The grapes are picked at night and crushed within an hour of picking before being sent to the fermentation tanks to preserve as much freshness as possible. 20% of the wine is barrel aged, and the winemaker adds 5% Malbec to add some more spice and mulberry tones. It is bright and aromatic on the nose, with dark fruits and just a touch of bacon fat aromas and mild floral tones. Flavors of blackcurrant, blueberries, cassis and vanilla are tempered by back notes of leather, licorice and sweet spice. It has the classic Aussie big, gutsy personality. Pair this with exotic flavors like Moroccan lamb tagine, or vegetable kabobs with tahini and za’atar spice.

Hillinger 'Eveline' Pinot Noir
Burgenland, Austria, 2017
This beautiful Pinot Noir was one of our top selling wines of last year, so much so that we sold out the distributor of every drop they had! They have finally been able to restock, and we are thrilled to have this wine available again. Many are not aware, but Austria produces some lovely Pinot Noirs. The ‘Eveline’ from Leo Hillinger has a typical Pinot nose with strawberries, raspberries and floral notes of violets, but all a little wild, reminiscent of the Burgundy appellation of Chambolle-Musigny. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and direct, with intense notes of herbs and puréed dark berries. It has soft tannins, a juicy ripeness and elegant, long finish. This would be amazing with Broiled Salmon with a Ginger-Shitake Glaze, or Chanterelle Ravioli with Sage and Rosemary Oil.

Lacroix Bordeaux Supérieur
Bordeaux, France, 2018
While there are many revered Bordeaux wines out there, the lion's share sell for quite high prices, and it is always a daunting task to find a value oriented Bordeaux of quality. We've really been thrilled with how well we did finding this one, and it really over-delivers for the money. It is a classic blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Cabernet France. It has elegance and structure, but also drinkability. Dark current and black cherry aromas mingle with scents of graphite, loamy earth and leather. It is medium-bodied, with some heft but not overwhelming, and flavors of cherry, mocha, cassis, and earthy supple tannins on the finish. Wonderful with Prime Rib or Leg of Lamb, it would also work very well with Smoky Blue Cheese or a Sharp Cheddar.

It has a pretty nose of red and black fruits, peppery herbs, cedary spice, and a touch of garrigue which emerge from the glass. Medium-bodied, it has a supple texture, no hard edges, and a good finish. It’s very much in the style of the 2018 vintage and will drink nicely for 7-8 years, and possibly upwards of a decade.”

New Selection!

Domaine Porte Rouge Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Rhone Valley, France, 2018
“The 2018 Porte Rouge checks in as 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre brought up all in older barrels.
