'84 Prosecco Extra Dry
Prosecco DOC, Treviso, Italy, NV
The ’84 Extra Dry is one of the most elegant Prosecco we have encountered in quite some time. Made from 100% Glera grapes, this is a bit drier than you might normally expect from Prosecco. A balanced version, with bright acidity providing fine cut for flavors of poached apricot, dried pineapple and praline as they ride the fine bead through to the lingering finish. This is a great aperitif or dessert wine, and would be beautiful with chocolate covered strawberries!

Gioia Lambrusco Amabile Rosso
Emilia-Romagna, Italy, NV
Lambrusco is a fruity, semi-dry lightly sparkling wine that is a favorite of ours for Autumn, and might just be the ultimate pizza pairing. Lambrusco is the name that applies to both the style of wine and the grapes used to make it; more accurately, it is a collective term for a group of grape varieties grown throughout the region and used to make this iconic wine. Very lightly fizzy in a style similar to Prosecco, many more affordable Lambrusco are carbonated by the charmat method, were the gas is pumped into the vines. Some of the more premium examples will be bottel fermented in the methode traditionelle, but the charmat method works for un on the Gioia, as it is both delicious and at a great price! It has a bright purple-red hue in the glass, with rich aromatics. Semi-sweet, fruity and harmonious, it has flavors and aromas of black cherries, black plums, violets, dried thyme and aged balsmic vinegar. As mentioned earlier, Lambrusco might be the best pizza pairing ever, but it also works extremely well with roast turkey and cranberry sauce, or tart cherry pie.

White Wines
Bohigas 'X' Xarel-lo
Catalunya, Spain, 2018
The wine has aromas and flavors of bright lemon, green apple, fresh herbs and spices. It is light-bodied with apple undertones and a fruity finish. The grape Xarel-lo is not unknown to us wine geeks, but we are much more accustomed to seeing it as a background element in blended Spanish wines, especially in the sparkling wines of Cava. This however is a delicious example of the grape as the main focus of a non-bubbly wine, one of the few of this grape we've encountered. For more than 6 centuries the Bohigas family has been growing vines and managing their own vineyards with over 150 hectares. The vineyards a very well situated to grow white varieties as they get lots of sunshine but the evenings are very cool retaining the freshness in the wines. Fans of Sauvignon Blanc or Italian white wines will definitely find a lot
to like in this wine!

Domaine Duffour Blanc
Côtes de Gascogne, France, 2019
This blend of Colombard, Gros Manseng, and Ugni Blanc from the Gascogne region has become a customer favorite, and understandably so. In the glass, the Domaine Duffour is a pale lemon-yellow color with a crisp, clean appearance and pleasantly round viscosity for a white wine. On the nose and palate, there are immediate fresh notes of Key lime pie, lemon rind, citrus grove, crushed white fruit, stone fruit and chalky minerals. Cotes de Gascogne is the IGP title for wines that are produced in an area centered on the Gers administrative department of South-West France. The countryside here is verdant, and the low rolling terrain is interspersed with small, picturesque villages. All in all, this is well suited to viticulture, as the soils and climate work together across the area to create an optimal environment for vineyards.

Castellano Pinot Grigio
Venezie, Italy, 2020
If there were a dictionary entry for the phrase ‘well made Pinot Grigio’ it would be a picture of a bottle of Castellano. While Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are wines made of the same grape, there are definite stylistic differences. The style in which Pinot Grigio is typically made is so distinctive that Gris and Grigio are often treated as different varieties, even though they have identical DNA. The Italian Grigio style, successfully adopted in the US and to a lesser extent Australia, is achieved by harvesting the grapes relatively early. This helps retain the naturally high acidity of the grape, and stainless steel fermentation maintains a freshness and liveliness. Castellano is produced in the northern region of Veneto in Cazzano di Tramigia, where wines have been produced since the 12th century. Clean yellow in the glass with lime green hints, it has excellent body and structure for its price. The flavor is fresh, with long lasting notes of apple and citrus fruits. A patio pounder for sure, but will also hold up to a nice cajun catfish filet, or a lemon kale salad
with garlic and parmesan.

Grochau Cellars Pinot Blanc
Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2015
Only 12 bottles still available at deal price!
John Grochau was first introduced to wine and winemaking while racing bicycles for a French team in the Loire Valley. After several years he returned to his hometown of Portland, Oregon, and translated his newfound passion for wine into a career as a Sommelier. This later led to working at top Oregon wineries Erath and Brick House, before starting his own urban winery buying grapes from organic and sustainably farmed vineyards. His Pinot Blanc is a complex and lovely full bodied white wine, making a wonderful alternative to Chardonnay. Apricot, Fuji apple and lemon balm aromas lead to a palate of apple, ripe pear, more apricot and some background tones of almond and brioche. Excellent acidity keeps the flavors balanced, and a surprising flint and mineral edge lingers on the finish. This would be fantastic with homey meals like Herb Roasted Chicken and Red Potatoes, or Turkey Pot Pie with lots of carrots and peas.

Gorghi Tondi Grillo
Coste a Preola, Sicily, Italy, 2020
This certified organic wine is made of 100% Grillo, from vineyards named Coste a Preola on the western side of Sicily near the Mediterranean Sea. Grillo is a grape associated with Sicily, with some believing it indigenous, while others believe it migrated from the region of Puglia many centuries ago. The Gorghi Tondi is an excellent introduction to the grape, with straw yellow color and greenish reflections. The nose is elegant and intense, with notes of passion fruit, mint, pineapple and white peach. On the palate it has an excellent balance, medium bodied, with more tropical fruits evened out by a orchard fruit tone of apple reminiscent of a Macon-Villages from Southern Burgundy. It is medium-bodied, rich and fragrant, with fresh acidity keeping the finish lithe and zesty. Excellent with New England Clam Chowder or a Yankee Lobster Roll, also could pair well with Chicken Pot Pie or creamy pasta dishes.

Borgo Moncalvo 'Ellipsis' Vino Bianco
Loazzolo DOC, Piedmont, Italy, 2019
This lovely Italian white is 100% Muscato (Muscat). Those of you who think that means this will be a sweet wine can just hold your horses for a mintue! While Muscato is the classic grape of famous dessert wines like Moscato d'Asti, it is not sweet all the time, and this is a wonderful dry example, which is not sweet in the least bit. Certified organic, it is a vibrantly aromatic wine with loads of aromas of honeysuckle, lychee and orange blossom. The wine's vibrant nose is aided by a method called Vinooxygen, patented by the Elegir family who own the winery. Their method allows them to carry out the full vinification without exposing the juice to oxygen. Their process gives them absolute control of the oxygen throughout, which allows them to keep intense aromatics, and can reduce sulfites up to 70%, without compromising the longevity of the wine. Juicy flavors of stone fruit, honeydew, kiwi and mint deliver a juicy, refreshing palate and come off almost weightless on the long, spicy finish. This wine would work with a variety of foods, from basil pesto pork chops to steamed mussels in Thai red curry, or paprika chicken with a creamy feta sauce.

Albert Mann Auxerrois Vieille Vignes
Alsace, France, 2018
This beautiful Alsatian wine is 100% Auxerrois farmed Organically and Biodynamically from 45+ year old vines on gravel and clay-limestone soils. Auxerrois (or Pinot Auxerrois) is a white wine grape grown fairly extensively in Alsace, and is blended in the background of more Alsatian wines than one might realize. It shines most brightly out of the North portion of Alsace, where the cooler climate helps this low-acid variety acheive a good level of freshness. The Albert Mann winery follows minimal intervention winemaking, and utilize native yeast fermentation. The resulting with is fresh and bright, with ripe pear, pineapple and golden plum aromas, complimented by hints of spices and honey. The palate is dense and layered, with a suave, long finish, just the type of white wine that I can really enjoy in winter weather. More of those golden orchard and tropical fruit flavors abound, with background hints of balsamic, menthol and nutmeg. This wine is great with rich foods, from something like Celery Root Veloute to Halibut Meuniere to Cheese Fondue.

He was amongst the early winemakers who saw the potential of Malbec out of Argentina, and he purchesed many old vine, high elevation vineyards focused on Malbec. His rose has a bright copper color, and fresh fruit aromas of strawberries and raspberries with citrus hints. Domaine St. George Cabernet Sauvignon
California, 2018
One wine that we seem to always be on the hunt for is the great, everyday California Cab, one that balances affordability and quality, yet still tasting truly of Cabernet Sauvignon and not just like ‘red wine’. Well, we found a definite winner here with the Domaine St. George! Based primarily on fruit from Sonoma County, it over-delivers with concentration and finesse. Ripe black cherry and cedar aromas combine on the nose, with a touch of vanilla oak in the background. It is richly flavored with black currant and black cherry accents, with mild tones of smoke and mint. It is velvety and soft yet intense on the palate, with lingering berry flavors.

Ramos Reserva
Alentejo, Portugal, 2018
João Portugal Ramos is Portugal’s most famous winemaker. Even before making his own wines, he was deeply respected as a consultant, and is viewed by many as one of the driving forces in helping to modernize Portugese wine production and to introduce their delicious wines to a more global audience. This ‘Reserva’ blend comes from the Alentejo region, a hot, dry area in eastern Portugal that covers about a third of the country. It is a combination of the indigenous grapes Trincadeira and Aragonez (Tempranillo), with a little Syrah in the background. Zesty and medium-bodied, it is rich yet also elegant. Ripe tannins are effortlessly integrated with blackberry, black plum, and dried fig fruit tones. Those bright fruit accents are underscored with leather, grilled herb and savory spice details. The finish is spicy and long lasting, with a juicy aftertaste. This would be great with Sausage and Peppers, or Herb-Roasted Lamb.

Giovine Barbera d'Asti
Piedmont, Italy, 2020
Barbera is the most widely planted red wine grape of the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. Barbera d’Asti is made of grapes grown around the town of Asti, in the hilly eastern Piedmont, and is one of the most renowned regions for the grape. Deeply colored, the wine has bold aromatics, with dark fruit and perfumed ontes of violet, plum, and dark cherry. The palate is equally attractive with a nice mix of red and dark berry flavors, a hint of spice, and subtle floral quality. Medium to full bodied, it is fresh with fine-grained tannins, and so easy to drink. While Nebbiolo wines like Barolo and Barbaresco might get the highest praise out of the Piedmont, it is Barbera like this that winemakers and consumers alike enjoy while they wait for their long lived Nebbiolo wines to come around!

La Maialina 'Gertrude' Red Blend
Tuscany, Italy, 2018
45% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot
Gertrude has been our best selling Italian Red for at least 3 years now. This blend is what we might call a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. The term Super-Tuscan was coined by journalists in the 1970’s to describe a handful of wines from Tuscany that were using non-traditional grapes. Due to the grapes used, these wines could only be called ‘Table Wines’ according to Italian wine laws, although their quality was far above normal table wine levels. The classic Super-Tuscans now cost hundreds of dollars a bottle, which is why we call this charming affordable blend a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. This wine offers remarkable value for the complex flavors it delivers. A bright acidity supports robust flavors of grilled meat, fennel, spice, black cherry, dark chocolate and
tobacco into a satisfying, lengthy finish.

Sterparo Primitivo
Basilicata IGT, Italy, 2019
This is a fantastic example of Primitivo coming from Basilicata in Southern Italy. Primitivo is a bold, dark red, which probably arrived in Italy from Croatia where it is still grown under several tongue-twisting names, and it was also introduced into the United States in the early 19th Century under the name Zinfandel. Fresh marjoram, violet and crushed pink peppercorn notes accent black cherry and black olive flavors in this lively, medium-bodied red framed by crisp tannins. Aged leather, sandalwood and garrigue accents impart an old-school feel to this well-knit red, which ends in a nicely spiced finish. A classic pairing from where this was made is next to Pizza Rustica, which is topped with tomatoes, onions, capers, garlic and anchovies.

Burgo Viejo Crianza
Rioja, Spain, 2018
Six families of farmers founded Bodegas Burgo Viejo in 1987 (with the next generation coming on-board, it is now sixteen families working together). Burgo Viejo´s main asset has always been their exquisite winemaking process, using grapes collected from its own vineyards, going back to the times when they were just a wine cellar selling in bulk (they started as a cooperative in the 1950's). Their Crianza is one of the best values out of Spain. Crianza is the first step in the specific aging requirements of Rioja wines – to be a Crianza a wine must spend at least one year in oak, and then at least 6 months in the bottle before being released. The Burgo Viejo has smoke-accented cherry, black currant and coconut aromas sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper that adds spicy lift. It is plush and broad in the mouth, offering dark fruit liqueur and oak spice flavors that finish creamy and appealingly ripe, with round tannins. This is fresh and persistent wine, and an excellent introduction to Rioja.

Le Dix de Saint Damien
Vin de France, 2020
This is a unique, delicious wine that we love working with when we can, which is usually just once a year in small amounts, and they go quickly. We're just now offering it out, and we are already working on getting more! While this wine was made in France’s Rhone Valley, it only carries the ‘Vin de France’ designation as it is made from too lesser known (and totally cool) hybrid grapes that are not recognized within the Rhone Valley wine laws. It is 50% Marselan, a red wine grape that is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, first bred in 1961. The other 50% is Caladoc, a red wine grape crossing of Grenache and Malbec, first bred in 1958. Overall, it is a juicy, dark fruited, herbal and earthy effort that’s as easy drinking as they come. The nose wafts aromas of blackberry and sweet spice, followed by a palate of dark cassis tones, with black raspberry, framboise and black plum accents. It finishes with very mildy dusty tannins and some good minerality, giving nice complexity. This rides a perfect balance between a wine to sip all on its own, and as a great foil for anything thing you might Barbeque!

Domaine du Fournier Côtes du Rhône Villages Signargues
Rhone Valley, France, 2016
In the classification of Rhone Valley wines, the Villages level stils between the generic Côtes du Rhône title and location-specific cru wines such as Gigondas or Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This beauty from Domaine du Fournier is a single vineyard wine coming out of the Signargues region in the far south of the Rhone Valley. It is predominently Syrah, at 70%, with 30% Grenache making up the rest of the blend. It's a muscular, full-bodied Rhone wine perfect for the winter's chill. Blackberry and plum flavors are densely concentrated, along with warming accents of dried sage and mint framed by soft, plush tannins. The finish is moderately long, with a nice touch of cinnamon and bramble at the end. Try this with Swiss Chard sauteed with Dried Apricots and Pine Nuts, or for the meat eaters search out a nice Venison Loin, and do seared medallions with Blackberry Sauce.

Steindorfer 'Apetion Rouge'
Burgenland, Austria, 2019
Austrian reds can have a reputation of being austere, but this ripe, robust blend disputes that idea immediately! The father/son team of Ernst and Roland Steindorfer craft this wine from their nicely ripe Burgenland plots of Blaufränkisch (40%), St. Laurent and Zweigelt (30% each). Aging for 17 months in 2nd and 3rd use French oak barriques pulls the wine together nicely. In the balanced 2019 vintage, this has plenty of ripe cherry and black plum fruit, with a really satisfying sense of weight on the palate and a firm – but still smooth – finish that invites both solo sipping and matching up to robust foods. Wonderfully aromatic notes of wild blueberry rise from the glass, with a slight note of cinnamon. While lovely with more complex fare like Duck Confit or classic Wiener Schnitzel with Red Cabbage, this wine could also be your new favorite pairing to a classic American Meatlof.

Rosé Wines
Fabre Montmayou Rosé
Mendoza, Argentina, 2020
This Argentine Rosé is 100% Malbec, but is made in a very French style. Owner and diretor Hervé Fabre was born in Bordeaux, and arrived in Argentina in the early 1990s looking for opportunities to invest in vineyards and start a winery. He was amongst the early winemakers who saw the potential of Malbec out of Argentina, and he purchesed many old vine, high elevation vineyards focused on Malbec. His rose has a bright copper color, and fresh fruit aromas of strawberries and raspberries with citrus hints. A crist, well-balanced wine, it has the depth and texture to drink on its own in the sunshine, but also the complexity ot match up with char-grilled fish or tuna empanadas.

Red Wines
StoneCap Syrah
Columbia Valley, Washington, 2017
The Monson family owns the sprawling Goose Ridge Estate Vineyard (1,300 acres), and sell much of their fruit, which allows them to produce StoneCap as a fully Estate wine at an extremely sensible price. Their Syrah starts with aromas of wild berries, caramel and smoke. It has full-bodied flavors of black raspberry, black cherry and plum with hints of tobacco, citrus zest and mocha. Try this with Chorizo Stuffed Chayote Squash, Chicken Meatballs and Spicy Arrabbiata Spaghetti, or Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Bisque with a Grilled Pimento Cheese Sandwich.
