New Zealand Wines of Broadbent Selections
with special guest Max Kast
Tuesday, April 17th
7:00 PM
For our April Nana's Wine Dinner, we are looking forward to welcoming back Max Kast, our local representative for Broadbent Selections. Many of you might also remember Max from his tenure as Sommelier at The Fearrington House, but for the past several years he has worked with us to discover a variety of the great wines brought to the market by Broadbent. Michael Broadbent is one of the most renowned experts in Port and Madeira, and established his family name as leaders in the wine world. His son Bartholomew expanded his scope beyond the classic fortified wines, and put together a portfolio spanning the globe of beautiful wines. When they look for wines to import, Broadbent Selections has a few absolutes. First and foremost, the wine must be the very best of its type. It's not enough for a wine to please them; its quality and value must bowl them over. It's been said that the difference between a good meal and a great meal is that, with the former, you finish the meal thinking, "The food was good". With a great meal however, you think, "Life is good". And that's precisely what they look for, and what they're proud to represent; wines that gratify not just the palate, but the soul. Yet, they do more than represent wine. They also represent the people and passion behind those wines, which is why, since they were founded in 1996, their focus has always been on family-owned wineries, on places with personality and stories, and on wines that come from the heart. Quality and character: those are absolutes.
Once we had set a date to do a spring dinner with Max and Broadbent, the question became what part of their portfolio to concentrate on. It turns out that Max is recently returned from a visit to their amazing New Zealand properties, and was full of enthusiasm for the wines, so it became an obvious choice! The wines we will feature that night come from two of New Zealand's best wineries - Spy Valley and Mt. Difficutly.
Owned and operated by the Johnson Family , Spy Valley Wines is one of Marlborough’s few remaining 100% Kiwi family owned wine companies. Located up the road from a US government listening post (the Spy base), Spy Valley is know around the world as one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed producers. The Johnson Family established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneering what was then a Marlborough sub-region, the Johnsons’ Lower Waihopai development continued, with the fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies. In 2000, the first vintage under the Spy Valley label was released. With a modern, fully integrated winemaking facility and a passion for excellence, Spy Valley consistently produces globally acclaimed award winning wines. Like most Marlborough wineries, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are Spy Valley specialties but chief winemaker and aromatic fanatic Paul Bourgeois and his team, have set a benchmark for New Zealand aromatic whites.
Established in 1992, Mt Difficulty Wines is home to some of Central Otago’s oldest and most revered vineyards. Situated along Felton Road in the famous sub-region of Bannockburn, Central Otago, this unique area of extremes is ideally suited to crafting wines that speak with a sense of place. “Our philosophy combines ethical viticulture with minimal intervention allowing the wine to express its personality and reflect its home.” Mt Difficulty Estate is comprised of six vineyards; Templars Hill, Pipeclay Terrace, Menzies Terrace, Mansons Farm, Target Gully and Long Gully – total plantings of 40 hectares protected by the rain shadow of Mt Difficulty. The region provides New Zealand’s only “continental” style climate. The vine age gives the wines, particularly the Pinot Noirs, extra complexity and concentration. Mount Difficulty is integral in providing low rainfall and humidity for the region. Bannockburn enjoys hot summers, a large diurnal temperature variation and long cool autumns; conditions which bring the best out of the Pinot Noir grapes. These conditions, along with soils which are ideal for viticulture, provide an excellent basis not only for Pinot Noir, but also for Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Chardonnay.
We've cherry picked the best of the best from each winery to pour, and Scott Howell and his staff will pair up Nana's exceptional cuisine as always to bring the best out of the meal. Since neither of these wineries exports and dessert wines, we've paired the final course with one of Broadbent's namesake exemplary Madeiras, which will be an additional treat! These dinners usually sell out a week or two before happening, so don't delay and call to make your reservation today!
