Sparkling Wine
Sokol Blosser 'Bluebird Cuvée'
Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2018
This is the second vintage of Sparkling Wine from one of our favorite wineries, and we’ve been fans since the very first sip. Based all on white grapes, with Chardonnay in the largest percentage, the wine is made following the Méthode Traditionelle process. A classic Brut style, it expresses aromatics of apple blossom, lychee, and hints of white peach. The mouthfeel is bright and vibrant with notes of just ripe pear and lime zest. Dry on the palate, it finishes crisp with a lingering mineral flavor.

Three Pears Pinot Grigio
California, 2019
It's been a good while since we found a California Pinot Grigio that we really liked, and this one definitely impressed for its price point. A project by Randy and Megan Mason, who's Sauvignon Blanc we also work with, all the fruit for this project comes from the Lodi/Clarksburg Delta region of California. A bit full and rounder than its Italian cousins, due additionally to some minimal skin contact, this has inviting aromas of pear and baked apple, leading to fresh and delicate flavors of more pear and nectarine, rounded by a lingering, honeyed rich finish. Pair this with Broiled Salmon with Papaya & Avocado Salsa, or Calabrian Chile Pasta and Grilled Chicken.

Poderi del Nespoli Famoso
Emilia Romagna, Italy, 2019
Famoso means 'famous' in Italian, an odd name for a grape that as recently as 20 years ago was nearly extinct even in its indigenous area of Emilia Romagna. While mentioned in documents as far back as 1437, by the late 19th century its plantings had fallen into decline, and by 2000 all that was left was two rows of vines in Mercato Saraceno, northeast of Florence. But the discovery of these two rows inspired a band of local wine producers with a passion for indigenous grape varieties to experiment with the vines, the wine and to join together to save the variety. They liked the grape’s toughness, the wine’s distinctive floral aroma and light acidity, saw its potential for producing a top-quality white wine. Poderi del Nespoli shows the great bounty of their hard work! Led by aromas of jasmine and orange blossoms, it is rich with tropical and white fruit scents and flavors. It has intense fruit flavors of peach, apricot, and green apple with a fresh, clean and balanced acidity, and a long lasting, aromatic finish. This white wine shines with Asian cuisines and anything with a bit of spice to it.

Marqués de Riscal Verdejo
Rueda, Spain, 2019
Verdejo is one of our favorite Spanish white grapes. For us, it hits a perfect middle ground between Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay – not quite as crisp as Sauvignon Blanc, but not as rich and full as Chardonnay either, with some great tropical fruit tones. While very prominent in Spanish wines these days, Verdejo was nearly forgotten and extinct as recently as the early 1970s. The Riscal winery primary in the revival and reinvigoration of Verdejo in Spain, and they were highly involved in making the Rueda region one of the premier areas for the grape. Their version that we enjoy today has a bright yellow color and high aromatic intensity, with notes of melon, mango, passionfruit, but also earthier hints of fennel and fresh grass. Fruity yet smooth on the palate with a slightly bitter finish which is typical of the variety, giving it a long, pleasing finish. This is a wine that is fantastic with a Honey Glazed Ham, but also works wonders with grilled seafood, especially sardines or calamari.

A.A. Badenhorst 'The Curator' White
Swartland, South Africa, 2019
This tasty blend from South Africa is 83% Chenin Blanc, 10% Chardonnay, and 7% Viognier. Winemaker Adi Badenhorst says "There is so much high quality fruit in the Swartland that ends up unrecognizable in Bag-in-Box blends. I felt that by adding a little more care to the vinification of these grapes, while maintaining cost efficiency in production, we could produce wines that would be sure to turn a few heads for a very reasonable sum of money." He definitely delivers on that idea! Chenin Blanc is the backbone and structure of this blend. The Chardonnay was naturally fermented and took a long time to complete fermentation, resulting in great texture and aromas of dried peaches and apricots and ripe citrus. The Viognier, from one of Badenhorsts favorite growers and vineyards, completes the Swartland canvas and brings some spice and palate length to the wine. Aromas of lemon zest, green tropical fruits and spices lead to a palate of ripe, honeyed stonefruit and melon. It is a rich wine, but classically dry on the finish.

Bohigas 'X' Xarel-lo
Catalunya, Spain, 2018
The wine has aromas and flavors of bright lemon, green apple, fresh herbs and spices. It is light-bodied with apple undertones and a fruity finish. The grape Xarel-lo is not unknown to us wine geeks, but we are much more accustomed to seeing it as a background element in blended Spanish wines, especially in the sparkling wines of Cava. This however is a delicious example of the grape as the main focus of a non-bubbly wine, one of the few of this grape we've encountered. For more than 6 centuries the Bohigas family has been growing vines and managing their own vineyards with over 150 hectares. The vineyards a very well situated to grow white varieties as they get lots of sunshine but the evenings are very cool retaining the freshness in the wines. Fans of Sauvignon Blanc or Italian white wines will definitely find a lot
to like in this wine!

Red Wines
Chateau d'Oupia 'Les Hérétiques'
Pays d'Hérault, France, 2019
This is a truly classic French Bistro wine, or Table wine, as it is affordable and approachable, and as tasty on its own as it is with Steak Frites. It is 100% Carignan, from an area around Minervois in the south of France. It is medium-bodied, with decent tannins and aromas of raspberries and blueberries. The palate is pure, clean and full of black fruit flavors and slight pepper nuances. Half of the wine is fermented in barrel, and half is fermented by carbonic maceration. Carbonic maceration is a fermentation technique where full bunches of grapes are put into tanks, uncrushed and still on their stems, and then the tanks are sealed and filled with carbon dioxide, creating an anaerobic atmosphere without any oxygen. Without oxygen, fermentation will begin inside each individual grape, as the weight of the grapes themselves end up crushing and releasing the juice. The result is a juicy, fruit-forward wine with bright acidity, low tannins, and lively character.

Domaine St. George Cabernet Sauvignon
California, 2018
One wine that we seem to always be on the hunt for is the great, everyday California Cab, one that balances affordability and quality, yet still tasting truly of Cabernet Sauvignon and not just like ‘red wine’. Well, we found a definite winner here with the Domaine St. George! Based primarily on fruit from Sonoma County, it over-delivers with concentration and finesse. Ripe black cherry and cedar aromas combine on the nose, with a touch of vanilla oak in the background. Broadbent Douro Red
Douro Valley, Portugal, 2019
One of our favorite finds of last Fall was the Broadbent Dao White, so we were thrilled to start working with its companion Douro Valley Red blend this year! A classic Portuguese dry red blend, this is made up of native Douro Valley grapes Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca. It is an amazing value for its price, and easily one of the most elegant $15 wines we’ve had in quite some time. Dark purple in color, it has a nose of fresh blackberry, dark cherry, black plum and blueberry, with secondary notes of violets, purple lilacs, cracked pepper and dried herbs. On the palate it is a wine of medium body with pleasant acidity, fresh dark fruit, medium tannin, and a fruit driven finish. Great with pork chops, stews, or whatever type of braised meat you’ve had in your Instapot all day. But be forewarned - if you open one of these to sip while you cook, you very well may need a second bottle to have with the meal!

La Maialina 'Gertrude' Red Blend
Tuscany, Italy, 2018
45% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot
Gertrude has been our best selling Italian Red for at least 3 years now. This blend is what we might call a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. The term Super-Tuscan was coined by journalists in the 1970’s to describe a handful of wines from Tuscany that were using non-traditional grapes. Due to the grapes used, these wines could only be called ‘Table Wines’ according to Italian wine laws, although their quality was far above normal table wine levels. The classic Super-Tuscans now cost hundreds of dollars a bottle, which is why we call this charming affordable blend a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. This wine offers remarkable value for the complex flavors it delivers. A bright acidity supports robust flavors of grilled meat, fennel, spice, black cherry, dark chocolate and
tobacco into a satisfying, lengthy finish.

It is a blend of mostly Zinfandel, with some Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Alicante Bouschet blended in. Gobelsburg Zweigelt
Niederösterriech, Austria, 2018
If you are a Zinfandel fan, then you will likely enjoy Zweigelt. A hybrid grape developed in 1922 by crossing the Saint-Laurent and Blaufrankish grapes, Zweigelt is now the most widely planted red-wine grape in Austria. Coming from the warm and rewarding 2018 vintage, the Gobelsburg Zweigelt is a charmer. Rich cherry fruit aromas mix with notes that are a little piquant and peppery, and perhaps even have a touch of almond. Medium-bodied with bright acidity, it has big flavors of ripe dark cherry, blackberry, and wood spice accents. Every time I taste this wine is makes me think of a meeting of Zinfandel and Pinot Noir, and is wonderfully versatile in its food pairings. The ‘Eveline’ from Leo Hillinger has a typical Pinot nose with strawberries, raspberries and floral notes of violets, but all a little wild, reminiscent of the Burgundy appellation of Chambolle-Musigny. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and direct, with intense notes of herbs and puréed dark berries. It has soft tannins, a juicy ripeness and elegant, long finish. Enjoy this great wine with a variety of dishes, everything from Chicken Chili and Avocado Salsa, to Blackened Mahi Mahi, or even Roast Beef.

The Ned Rosé of Pinot Noir
Marlborough, New Zealand, 2020
Named for one of Marlborough’s most famous peaks, The Ned wines are some of our favorites out of New Zealand. Made of 100% Pinot Noir, the grapes are gently pressed to minimize color and tannins. Enticing aromas of wild strawberries and watermelon with a delicate floral lift lead the way, followed by a creamy palate balanced by crisp acidity, creating a juicy, flavorful burst of red fruit. A versatile rosé than can be enjoyed year round, though it may be at its best with take-out sashimi and a face chat with a good friend on the patio!

StoneCap Syrah
Columbia Valley, Washington, 2017
The Monson family owns the sprawling Goose Ridge Estate Vineyard (1,300 acres), and sell much of their fruit, which allows them to produce StoneCap as a fully Estate wine at an extremely sensible price. Their Syrah starts with aromas of wild berries, caramel and smoke. It has full-bodied flavors of black raspberry, black cherry and plum with hints of tobacco, citrus zest and mocha. Try this with Chorizo Stuffed Chayote Squash, Chicken Meatballs and Spicy Arrabbiata Spaghetti, or Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Bisque with a Grilled Pimento Cheese Sandwich.

It is richly flavored with black currant and black cherry accents, with mild tones of smoke and mint. It is velvety and soft yet
intense on the palate, with lingering berry flavors.

The Show Malbec
Mendoza, Argentina, 2018
The Show is a collaborative project of three wine entrepreneurs – Charles Bieler, Joel Gott, and Roger Scommegna. This 2018 vintage has a deep red, nearly purple color, with aromatics of concentrated black fruits, cigar box and notes of toasty oak barrels. Dark fruit, baking spice and rich flavors continue on the palate, which is quite brooding and focused. The tannins are super integrated and soft, but with terrific balance and finish that gives it unusual length across the palate. Just a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon
blended in adds complexity.

Three Wine Co. Zinfandel
Contra Costa County, California, 2018
Three Wine Company is a winery founded by Matt Cline, one of the two Cline brothers behind Cline Cellars, who helped propel Zinfandel into popularity in the early 1990s. The Zinfandel grapes sourced for this wine are from in and around the bay area town of Oakley in the northeast corner of Contra Costa County. It is a blend of mostly Zinfandel, with some Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Alicante Bouschet blended in. Aged in American oak barrels for 12 months, the nose is full of ripe cherry and blueberry with undertones of toasted hazelnut and vanilla. The palate is full of briary wild berries, spice, and cracked pepper, with a lively pop of tannins on the finish. The wine has great structure, and is well-balanced. Try this out with chick pea and paprika stuffed mushrooms, or lamb sliders with stilton.

From rare tuna to spicy pad thai to lamb kabobs or beef stew - it's harder to find dishes this wine doesn't work with than ones it does!

Hillinger 'Eveline' Pinot Noir
Burgenland, Austria, 2017
This beautiful Pinot Noir was one of our top selling wines of last year, so much so that we sold out the distributor of every drop they had! They have finally been able to restock, and we are thrilled to have this wine available again. Many are not aware, but Austria produces some lovely Pinot Noirs. This would be amazing with Broiled Salmon with a Ginger-Shitake Glaze, or Chanterelle Ravioli with Sage and Rosemary Oil.
