German Wines

Picture
Saturday, June 21st
1:00 - 3:00

With Summer heat really starting to flex, we thought this weekend would be a great time to do a tasting theme that we only visit very sporadically - German Wines! It is a shame that we don't focus on these wines more frequently, but the slight bit of sugar in some (but certainly far from all) German wines makes many consumers gun shy. Germany's cool climate allows grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and enhancing aromatic complexity. Germany also has a wide range of terroirs, from the steep riverbanks of the Mosel, to volcanic soils and limestone-rich slopes, and each region imparts a unique signature to the wines. Overall, German winemakers are known for their meticulous craftsmanship, often creating wines with exceptional clarity and purtity of fruit. While Germany does do some lovely red wines, especially Pinot Noir, and while we are seeing more and more German reds being produced and offered in the U.S. due to climate change, for this tasting we will be sticking with three whites and one rosé-esque selection. Of course we will feature one Riesling, the grape Germany is most renowned for producing. German Rieslings range from dry (trocken) to lusciously sweet, all characterized by vibrant acidity, floral aromas, and complex mineral notes. We'll feature one of our best sellers of the category, a wine that does have a slight sweet edge, but impeccable balance. Our guest pourer for the day, Noel Sherr of A-Vin-Garde Wines, will be able to give you some great ideas on how that touch of sugar can work well with a wide variety of foods, as Riesling is one of the most versatile wines you can go to for food pairing. We will also be featuring a Scheurebe from the Rheinhessen and a Silvaner from Baden, two whites that have lower alcohol content while delivering intense flavor, making them super refreshing and food-friendly. We'll wrap up with a wine made of Spätbugunder (Pinot Noir) that only sees a very minimal amount of skin contact, leaving it in a style that is somewhat a rosé and somewhat an orange wine, and really delicious. In short, German wines are special for their elegance, balance, and unmatched ability to express both grape variety and place of origin, and we can't wait to introduce you to them!
