Spanish Wines for Thanksgiving

For most of the month of November, our Saturday tastings are going to revolve around finding you the perfect wines for your Thanksgiving meal. To get us started, we are going to look at fantastic pairings using wines from Spain. We asked our good friend Jen Salomé of The Haw River Wine Man to choose four wines that she thinks will do wonders on your holiday table. These are versatile wines that match up to a good variety of flavors, as you always need that flexibility with the plethora of tastes you find with most Turkey Day spreads. We'll start, as every celebration should, with some bubbles! The Spanish Cava produced in the Penedés region outside or Barcelona are not only some of the tastiest Sparkling Wines, but are often fantastic values as well. Next, we will revisit one of our favorite Spanish white wines, and amazing blend of the grapes Viura and Malvasia from the renowned Rioja region. We will then move on to the reds, with a beautiful Mencía based wine from Northwestern Spain. While many Americans are still just learning about the Mencía grape, it is one of our favorites and is definitley in the top tier of Spanish wines to pair with food. Finally, we'll finish with another classic, as we can't do Spain without some Tempranillo, and we've got an excellent Rioja Crianza to fit the bill. Thanksgiving will be here in just a blink of the eye, so let's start getting ready!
