Wines of Northern Spain Saturday, April 27th 1:00 - 3:00 For this Saturday's tasting we are goind to sample some great Spanish wines, but we are going to focus on some of our favorites from the northern portion of this amazing wine producing country. We'll take our own version of the Camino de Santiago, the annual pilgrimage walk across the north of Spain. We'll start with a couple of fantastic Txakolina from Basque country. Both of these selections will be from Ameztoi winery, including their phenomenal rosado 'Rubentis'. This fizzy pink quaffer has a bit of a cult following, and always sells out quickly, so we squirreled some away specifically so that we could feature it at this tasting. We cannot visit northern Spain without tasting some Albariño, the lovely white wine produced in the northwest edge of the country, especially in Rías Baixas, often from vines that overlook the Atlantic Ocean stretching out west. Over the last decade or so, Albariño has become one of American wine lover's best known white Spanish wines, and deservedly so. We will have one of the absolute best for you to sample with the Do Ferreiro which we will be pouring. Finally, we'll venture a touch more inland from the coast to the region of Valdeorras on the eastern flank of Galicia, and sample and excellent red based on the Mencía grape. Mencía is slowly gaining traction as a known quantity with more casual American oenophiles, but it has been a big favorite amongst those in the wine profession for some time. Super food friendly, it always reminds me of a meeting of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. So we invite you to join us this Saturday on our pilgrimage to the best wines in Northern Spain!
