Germany's Wines are famous primarily for the world-class Riesling produced in its Mosel region, but over the last decade or two they have been entering a new stage it their wine history. In the early 21st Centuty, the country's winemakers are proving convincingly that they are good for more than just Riesling, and now export amazing Gewürztraminer, Spätburgunders (Pinot Noirs), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Silvaner, Sparkling Wines, Rosé and more. Those are not new grapes for the German community, but production levels in the past led to many of the best examples being consumed in Germany, and not finding their way overseas. With increased interest and growth in U.S. wine consumption, more and more of these wonderful wines find their way to the American market. We can also get rid of the idea that all German wines are sweet, which is just blatantly untrue. There are many delicious dry German wines, and even more that may have a touch of sugar but have brilliant acidity to give balance and keep the wine tasting more ripe than sweet. This weekend we will delve into a compelling line-up of some of our current favorite German delicacies. Sure, we'll have a classic Riesling from the Mosel, but we'll also include a great Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, a lightly sparkling Müller-Thurgau, and one of the absolute best Riesling Sekt (German Sparkling Wine) that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. This will be a great selection that can introduce you to a depth and complexity of German wines that you might not have know was there before!
