Krasno Wines - Slovenian Wine Tasting

Slovenia lies in the heart of Europe, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean and the Pannonian plain.  Slovenians refer to their country as "The Green Treasure of Europe" due to the natural beauty of its landscape.  This small country has a long history of wine production, which isn't surprising given its location between the northern latitudes of 45 and 47 degrees, the same latitueds shared by Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Northern Rhone Valley.  Added to this is it is neighbor to four top European wine producing nations:  Croatia to the South, Hungary to the East, Austria to the North, and Italy to the west.  Despite the cultural and political turmoil of the Balkan states over the past century, Slovenia has maintained it wine industry, one which has been particularly successful since the country gained independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991.  One of the ways they have achieved this is through cooperative wineries, where many growers will work together to have their fruit made to wine.  Some cooperative wineries may produce wines from fruit from as many as 300 to 400 families, and give them all a stake in the wines rather than just selling their fruit to an anonymous beverage company.  Krasno wines is the result of one such cooperative, and make some of the best wines being exported from Slovenia to America.  Slovenian wines, like Croatia wines, are still very new to many American wine drinkers, as the political climate of the area for decades had prevented them from being able to export their wines.  With a more open business environment these days we are happily seeing more wines from Slovenia become available in our area, and we hope to introduce you to some this Saturday!
