I'm sure a fair number of you reading this did a double take when you saw the theme for this tasting.  Mexican wine, really?  It was kind of a surprise to us as well!  I've read over the years of a growing wine community in Northwest Mexico, but I wasn't really aware of any of them being offered by wholesalers in our area.  Just a few weeks back though, I was talking with Mike Bostick, our sales rep for Epiphany Wines, and he mentioned he was heading to Mexico for a few days.  "A little vacation?" I asked, to which he replied "Nope, it's a work trip!".  Intrigued, I told him to keep me in mind if he ended up liking the wines.  The fact that we are featuring them this weekend should answer that!  All of these wines come through La Competencia Imports, and all are from Valle de Guadalupe.  Valle de Guadalupe is the key wine region of the state of Baja California in Mexico, and Baja California in turn is responsible for 90% of Mexican wine production.  Most of the vines are planted with classic European grape varieties, either from the early Jesuit plantings dating back to the 1700s, or transplanted by the young winemakers who have travelled to France, Spain and Italy to learn the science of enology, and brough cuttings back home with them.  To be honest, this will be a good learning experience for me as well, as I know just barely more about these wines than most customers.  Luckily our buddy Mike is back from visiting these wineries first hand, and can introduce us all to an exciting, emerging wine region!
