The Many Faces of Sangiovese

11/6/2019

Picture

Saturday, November 9th
4:30 - 7:00

In the right hands, Italy's most widely planted grape can exude a level of grace and class that is up there with the most compelling red wines of the world.  But Sangiovese is also often misunderstood, as it has more synonyms and identities than most grapes.  In Sangiovese you can see how Italy was once numerous City States which ended up combined together - from town to town through Tuscany, you will see several different names for the grape, as each village and town holds onto their own historical name for this noble grape.  Add to that the fact that many Italian, and European wine as a whole, are named for where they are from, and you find that multitudes of people drink Sangiovese without ever realizing it.  Sangiovese is virtually synonymous with the red wines of Tuscany, and all the romanticism that goes with the territory.  Our tasting will focus on Tuscany, where Sangiovese is the sole grape variety permitted in the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino, and provides the backbone to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the popular wines of Chianti.  Join us on Saturday as we taste 5 different expressions of Tuscan Sangiovese, and see how similar and different each can be.  So that we don't leave our white wine lovers completely out in the cold, we'll also feature a bonus sixth wine in a fantastic Tuscan Trebbiano.
