Many of our best values in imported wines come to us through wholesalers who direct import. Often in North Carolina, imported wines go through a three tier pricing process - an importer brings the wine to the state and sells to a wholesaler, who then turns around and sells to a reseller (like ourselves), who then sell to you, the consuming public. Each business along the way has rent and bills to pay, and so each adds a bit to the final sale price along the way. When one of the distributors we work with is able to both import and wholesale the wines, then one of those tiers goes out the window and we end up with much better pricing, giving you greater value. One of our favorite local distributors that does this in Haw River Wine Man, and they just pulled in a new winery that really caught our attention, so we wanted to share this discovery with you!
Château L'Ermite d'Auzan is oversen by the Castillon family, who have been working their terroir for 4 generations. They are located on the South side of the Costières de Nîmes, the southernmost vineyards of the Rhône Valley, facing Camargue and the Mediterranean Sea. They have been certified organic since 2020, and received their Demeter certification as full biodynamic in 2024, showing their dedication to being responsible stewards of their beautiful property. The estate's total surface area covers 80 hectares of sunny south facing vineyards, with a typically Rhône-like terrain with soil made up of rolled pebbles. They grow the classic Rhône grapes, including Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, Roussanne, and more. We will feature a Blanc and a Rouge from them, made in traditional Rhône style. They also venture into the Languedoc to make a wonderful rosé from the esteemed Sable de Camargue appellation, famous for it's classic Vin Gris. We'll taste three of the wines from this estate on Saturday, and hope you find them as delightful as we do!
