Portugal seems to be having a moment. While post-pandemic wanderlust has us hearing about lots of great overseas trips, among our local customers Portugal is proving to be one of the top destinations. It has been very notable over the last few months how many customers we've had come in wanting to get a feel for the dry wines of Portugal before they head over, or asking for more and more Portuguese wines once they get back with a new found love for the country's Vinho. That passion is well deserved, as there are numerous delicious Portuguese wines! Portuguese table wine was reserved for years almost entirely for the locals. Physically isolated from most of Europe and its wine culture, Portugal developed wines its own way, using its more than 300 native grapes in favor of trendier international varieties. We will take a small tour of some of these beautiful wines this weekend, including one the best known of Portugal's dry wines, the super refreshing Vinho Verde, a classic white wine with just a touch of carbonation, but we will also taste a more unique Vinho Verde which is a still wine (without fizz), and also made from a single grape varietal, whereas most Vinho Verde are blends of different grapes. This specific Vinho Verde was our inspiration for this tasting, as it has been a staff favorite since we discovered it a few months back.We will wrap up the tasting with two red wines, one a traditional blend out of the renowned Douro Valley, and also another cool blend from the Lisboa region, just north of the beautiful capital city. We hope you can join us this Saturday!
