Winter Warmers from Italy

Usually when we do a seasonal theme like this one, the weather works against us and we end up with the opposite of what we are pairing to. This Saturday appears to be up for grabs, and we'll have to see what nature brings us, but we will have great selections either way. We are picking out some of our favorite wines for shaking off the Winter's chill, and we're excited to taste them this weekend. These will be deep wines, texture driven and robust. But that does not mean they will only be reds, as we have selected one white wine that has enough 'oomph' and complexity to stand up to hearty foods and cold weather. Of course, the featured reds will shine brightly, with a great selection of wines as perfect with a roaring fire as they would be with beef stew or spicy bean chili. We hope to see you Saturday!
Compodora Albana Secco, Romagna DOGC
Compodora, Italy

Originating from the prestigious area of Compodora (meaning Golden Field), this wine represents an excellent expression of Albana, a wine grape native to Italy. This wine has a bright straw yellow color, and an aromatic bouquet characterized by floral notes of chamomile and jasmine, a delicate splash of stone fruits, and a light touch of almond. One the palate, it has a tremendous freshness and pleasant acidity. Albana is a balanced, medium body wine which retains a surprising fruit forward style in spite of being classified as a “dry” wine.

This Sicilian wine is made from 100% Carricante, a grape native to the area. The harvest is direct-pressed in stainless steel tanks and fermented with natural yeasts for one year in oak barrels. This wine is pale yellow with green reflections, with a medium body texture and a clean, minerally, seashell aroma reminiscent of it’s home. On the palate, there are undertones of green apple and anise with a lovely creme brulee finish.

Wine maker Marina Marcarino took over the management of the Punset estate in 1980 and began converting all of the processes to organic and biodynamic farming, rejecting the use of pesticides and embracing a philosophy she refers to as “the agriculture of doing nothing.” This is ruby-colored wine is pretty and perfumed take on the Piedmont region’s prized Nebbiolo with flavors of rose, hibiscus, 7801
brambles, currants, and blueberry. This wine is bright and crunchy, a little woodsy, at once intense and harmonious.

Since 1960, the Tezza family have been lauded for their wine crafting values. For the Brolo delle Giara, the Corvina, Rondinella, and Ostella grapes are dried until raisin like prior to natural yeast fermentation in old oak barrels. Visually, the wine presents a vivid garnet color, and aromas of aromatic herbs, roasted spices, and cherry compote, with rich flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, and moist earth. This wine easily outperforms many much more expensive Amarones, boasting incredible concentration alongside a smooth, warming texture.
