Weekly Saturday Tasting

3/23/2023

California's Central Coast

Picture
Saturday, March 25th
1:00 - 3:00

This weekend’s tasting will be an exploration of California’s Central Coast, an immense wine region that produces a huge variety of fantastic wines. The Central Coast AVA in California covers the long stretch of coastline from San Francisco Bay south to Santa Barbara, and reaches inland from the Pacific Ocean to the borders of the Central Valley. The climate and topography vary enormously across this immense region, making it impossible to generalize about winegrowing conditions. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are arguably the most important grapes planted in the region, grapes famous from France’s Rhone Valley have passionate champions in places, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Chenin Blanc make up a sizable chunks of the wines produced here. We'll taste two beautiful white wines, one Chenin Blanc and one Grenache Blanc, as well as a fantastic representation of the area's Pinot Noirs, and we cannot resist going to Paso Robles for a top notch Cabernet Sauvignon. While we are barely scratching the surface of the breadth of great wines from this region, these four wines are all standouts!

Curran Grenache Blanc
Santa Barbara County, California, 2021

Foxen 'Old Vines' Chenin Blanc
Ernesto Wickenden Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley, California, 2021

Timbre 'Opening Act' Pinot Noir
Mission Ranch Vineyard, Monterey, California 2021

Fossil Point Cabernet Sauvignon
Paso Robles, California, 2021

We had a great time with the extra tasting earlier this week, thanks to everyone who came out. In a little over a week we have another excellent opportunity to start your week off with a bang! On Tuesday evening, April 4th, we will host Inma Pazos from the Spanish winery Coto de Gomariz, and will taste through a selection of their
wines.
Nestled at the eastern edge of Galicia, the Ribeiro DO is split by three rivers. Coto de Gomariz is located in the zone of Ribeiro where the slopes overlook the Avia river and consists of 27 hectares. Shisteous, granitic and sandy soils, steep slopes, tiny yields and a unique microclimate make this spot ideal for growing the local varieties which include Treixadura, Godello, Loureira and Albariño. Owner Ricardo Carreiro and winemaker Xosé Lois Sebio have introduced biodynamic principles, and are producing
great wines at great prices.

We will have more information next week on exactly which wines we will be tasting, so please check back!
