Our tasting this week will focus on several of our current favorite Australian wines. Forget about the Yellow Tail and Koala Bay, and whatever other "critter wines" ruled the shelves in the early 2000s. The four wines we will have on Saturday show the class, refinement and value that can be found in today’s Australian wines. They still have the ripe fruit and bold personality that are so closely associated with many Aussie gems, but they don’t go over the top and have much more complexity and depth than the ultra low budget wines that dominate the grocery and big box store Australian selections. We'll start with a charming Australian take on a traditional Bordeaux Blanc, with a Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon Blend. Next up will be a classic Aussie Shiraz, as we can't do a tasting like this without they type of wine that put them on the oenology map. Our second red will be an excellent introduction to the experimental spirit of the region's winemakers, who are trying out a variety of different grapes from other wine countries, like the Delta Blue blend based on Portugal's Touriga Nacional. Finally, we'll finish up with a wine that often surprises American wine drinkers - Sparkling Shiraz! Bone dry, this lovely dark red bubbly is a fantastic brunch pairing. No jokes about dialect or down under, just delicious wines!
