Wines from Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo is an Italian wine region on the east Adriatic coast. Located in the mountainous center of the country, it is home to the very notable Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, as well as several other fantastic appellations. Winemaking there dates back to the sixth century BC, and it is believed that Hannibal was sipping on Abruzzo wines during his epic journey over the Alps. Unfortunatley, viticulture was sidelined for many centuries as the Abruzzo region's polulation went into decline, but the last 40-50 years have seen a renaissance in winemaking trhough the endeavors of co-operative wineries. With the revival in winemaking came bulk wine at first, however the region has now revamped its image towards producing more quality driven wines, with an increase in boutique wines. We will taste four wines from the region made of indigenous grapes, some extremely well known and some rather obscure, but all delicious!
