Los Dos Brut Rosé
Penedés, Spain, NV
Spanish Cava is a wonderful way to have bubbles in a Champagne style but an everyday price point. The Los Dos Brut Rosé is an excellent example, made of grapes from family vineyards in the renowned D.O. Penedés. A blend of Trepat, Monastrell and Garnacha, it is a rose pink in color. Red florals and ripe red berry aromas lead to cherry, strawberry, and raspberry flavors on the palate. Fresh with medium structure, it has a good balance between the acidity and the fruit concentration.

Castellano Pinot Grigio
Venezie, Italy, 2020
If there were a dictionary entry for the phrase ‘well made Pinot Grigio’ it would be a picture of a bottle of Castellano. While Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are wines made of the same grape, there are definite stylistic differences. The style in which Pinot Grigio is typically made is so distinctive that Gris and Grigio are often treated as different varieties, even though they have identical DNA. The Italian Grigio style, successfully adopted in the US and to a lesser extent Australia, is achieved by harvesting the grapes relatively early. This helps retain the naturally high acidity of the grape, and stainless steel fermentation maintains a freshness and liveliness. Castellano is produced in the northern region of Veneto in Cazzano di Tramigia, where wines have been produced since the 12th century. Clean yellow in the glass with lime green hints, it has excellent body and structure for its price. The flavor is fresh, with long lasting notes of apple and citrus fruits. A patio pounder for sure, but will also hold up to a nice cajun catfish filet, or a lemon kale salad with garlic and parmesan.

Mila Albariño
Rías Baixas, Spain, 2023
This wine is made with grapes grown in the renowned Salnés Valley. Made of vines averaging 30 years in age, the land is farmed naturally, and the wine is made and aged in stainless steel to preserve fruit freshness and brightness. This is a wonderful introduction to the Albariño grape for those who may not have experienced it before. An intense aroma of ripe peach, pear, mango and citrus leads to a front palate that is smooth and flavorful. On the tongue it has great balance between fruit flavors of grapefruit, peach, mild tropical fruit tones, and well-integrated acidity. The finish is fresh and fruity, but also full of nuances of minerality and herbs. It can work just as perfectly as an aperitif as it does with a meal, especially any seafood, and shows why Albariño has forged a place as the best known Spanish white wine in the domestic market.

Domaine Galevan 'Léon & Lili' Rosé
Méditerranée IGP, France, 2023
We love this rosé from one of our favorite Rhône Valley wineries, named after the two dogs that prowl the vineyards. Based on Grenache, it has healthy additions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Clairette, which is actually a white wine grape. The nose mixes red fruits, citrus and wildflowers. The palate has expressive notes of wild red berries and an appetizing freshness. Just a touch heavier than its fellow French rosé further south along the coast, it is still full of that Mediterranean warmth.

St. Kilda Shiraz has been our ‘go-to’ affordable Australian Shiraz for quite a while now. St. Kilda is produced by De Bartoli Wines, and is a brand aiming at incredible value and high quality from premium Southeast Australian fruit. The label depicts the iconic entrance of Luna Adventure Park located in the center of St. Kilda, a nod to the spirit of the place and the style of the wines. The sheer scale of this zone and the diversity of its climates, zones, and latitudes make it a virtual spice market for winemakers to choose from when selecting their vineyards and their grapes. This great Petite Sirah is part of Shannon Ridge’s High Elevation Collection. Wines in this series are a careful blend of three appellations within Lake County. It is stainless steel fermented and barrel aged in French and American oak to add a nice richness and balance. Picked at the peak of ripeness, this shows off dark fruits of blackberry, blueberry and hints of cranberry. Black pepper, cedar, warm spices and toast vanilla notes come out after a touch of air. Baba Merlot & Tannat
Comte Tolosan IGP, France, 2021
This lovely red from Southwest France is a new find for us, and is absolutely perfect for end of summer weather. It is made in a delightfully fruit forward style, but stays nicely light and fresh, and it would have worked perfectly in our recent Chilled Reds tasting. The Merlot brings out nice black cherry and raspberry tones, and slight hints of baking spice. The Tannat brings a darker color and just a touch of tannins, that gives the wine a bit of grip and keeps it from being just about the bright fruit notes. It is impressive that the winemakers were able to keep the Tannat, (a grape that can often be somewhat dense and brooding), fresher and lighter than one might assume. Put this lovely sipper on some ice, and have it on the patio with a steak salad or some blackened
Shrimp skewers.

Castro Ventosa Mencía
Bierzo, Spain, 2021
Not familiar with the Mencía grape? Well it’s about time you got to know this delicious wine! To get an idea of Mencía take a healthy dose of Cabernet Franc, mix it with Oregon Pinot Noir, Argentine Malbec, and California Zinfandel, and you’ll get something suitable for comparison. Castro Ventosa is a historic Bierzo winery, founded by the famed Perez family in 1752. Raul Perez is one of the icons of modern Spain, and his contemporaries and critics regard him as one of the country's great innovators, putting Bierzo on the map as a source of exceptional wine, and has been one of the major forces behind Mencía's quickly rising popularity among us wine geeks. A dark purple color, it is a highly perfumed wine with blue fruit, floral and baking spice aromas showing good clarity and a touch of smoky minerality. Silky, seamless and precise on the palate, it offers bitter cherry, boysenberry and spice cake flavors that deepen slowly on the back half. The spice and mineral notes drive a long, focused finish that’s given shape by smooth, fine-grained tannins. Traditional pairings of the region include Cecina, a cured smoked beef, Chorizo, and Empanadas with tuna and red pepper, which are more of a full pie than the smaller
Latin American version.

Wapisa Pinot Noir
Rio Negro, Patagonia, Argentina, 2022
‘Wapisa’ it the indigenous Patagonian word for ‘whale’, and many do frequent the coastline near the vineyard. Wapisa’s wines are an expression not just of the soils, but of the nearby ocean as well, and are a great example of the quality Pinot Noirs coming out of this up-and-coming wine region. This is a pretty Pinot Noir with a fragrant nose of red currants, sour cherries, wild strawberries, fresh flowers and dried leaves. It is medium-bodied with sleek tannins and bright acidity. It is pure, tangy and crisp with a savory edge. A perfect companion for duck confit, but works just as well with pulled chicken or pork.

Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo
Langhe, Piedmont, Italy, 2022
Langhe is the large appellation in Italy's Piedmont region that encompasses the renowned villages of Barolo and Barbaresco, where the world's most sought after Nebbiolo is grown. Whereas those site specific examples can run hundreds of dollars, the Nebbiolo many wineries put out under a general 'Langhe' heading can be quite affordable, and much more enjoyable to drink in their youth. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2022 is loaded with fragrance, flavor and freshness. it opens with pretty aromas of blue flowers and perfumed berry, while the juicy palate offers succulent dark cherry, raspberry and cake spice. Lithe tannins keep it polished. 2022 was a hot vintage, leading to this wine being in a style for immediate gratification, yet with a lot of bright energy and freshness.
