Quinta do Noval Port Tasting
Friday, November 18th
5:30 - 7:00

Picture
As the weather steadily gets more of a chill, and as the Holidays beckon, our thoughts turn to Port.  Port is the classic fortified wine of Portugal, a complex wine with natural grape sweetness, which is wonderfully rich, round, and smooth on the palate. One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also among the greatest.  It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit.  Noval is mentioned in land registries going back to 1715, and has been sold just twice in that time, once in the late 19th century, and to its present owners in 1993.  Noval has, however, a reputation for being an innovative, independent producer. We will have the opportunity on Friday to taste three highly rates gems from this
standard bearer of the Douro Valley.

Weekly Saturday Tasting

Broadbent Selections

Saturday, November 19th
4:30 - 7:00

Picture
For this Saturday's tasting we are going to look at another important importer in Broadbent Selections.  Michael Broadbent is one of the most renowned experts in Port and Madeira, and established his family name as leaders in the wine world.  His son Bartholomew expanded his scope beyond the classic fortified wines, and put together a portfolio spanning the globe of beautiful wines.  When they look for wines to import, Broadbent Selections has a few absolutes. First and foremost, the wine must be the very best of its type. It’s not enough for a wine to please them; its quality and value must bowl them over. It’s been said that the difference between a good meal and a great meal is that, with the former, you finish the meal thinking, “The food was good”. With a great meal however, you think, “Life is good”. And that’s precisely what they look for, and what they’re proud to represent; wines that gratify not just the palate, but the soul. Yet, they do more than represent wine. They also represent the people and passion behind those wines, which is why, since they were founded in 1996, their focus has always been on family-owned wineries, on places with personality and stories, and on wines that come from the heart. Quality and character: those are absolutes.  One of the other highlights of our featuring Broadbent Selections is that we get to welcome their new representative to our area - Max Kast.  Many of you may have met Max during his years as Sommelier and Beverage Director at Fearrington House.  Max has one of the most remarkable palates in the North Carolina wine community, and he has graciously guided many of us through perfect wine pairings at exemplary meals.  His knowledge is second to none in the area, and we are honored to be able to host Max as he guides us through six of his (and our) favorites of the portfolio.
