It has been a little while since we did a Saturday tasting focusing on just one winery. We were restocking our Piedmont selections in our Italy shelves, and noticed the number of bottles we had from the Abbona Winery, one of our favorites of the region. Being a small store, we usually try to carry a variety of labels from different producers, so when we offer multiples from a single winery you can trust that to be a solid statement of our belief in the quality of wines they produce. So noticing this, we thought it would be a great time to sing the praises of this gem in Northwest Italy!

The vineyards of Marziano Abbona, a vintner and farmer of great sensitivity and dedication to environmental protection, are set in the Langhe area, in one of Italy’s regions best suited to winegrowing. The winery was founded by Celso, Marziano’s father, who had the foresight to recognize the area’s potential for the production of top-quality wines. About sixty years ago, he planted the Doriolo vineyard in an area whose soil composition, exposure to sunlight and surrounding environment made it the ideal choice for the production of Dogliani Dolcetto wine. Marziano took up his father’s challenge and passion and, with the greatest care, patience and insight, he was able to produce wines of the highest quality, in which aromas and colors blend to give nectars reflecting the spirit of one of the Langhe area’s most highly regarded vintners. The turn of the millenium saw Marziano's daughters Mara and Chiara join him in the company, and help to guide the winery into the future.
We will taste four of their beautiful Piedmontese wines. We will start with their 'Valle dell'Olmo' Favorita, a classic Piedmont white grape that is closely related to Vermentino. Next we'll have their 'Cinerino' Bianco, a unique wine from the region as it is 100% Viogier. The Abbona family were very enamored with Viognier from France's Rhone Valley, and were able to purchase some high quality clippings and plant the vine in their vineyards, with a desire to reproduce the excellence they found in France. Moving on to red wines, we'll start with their 'Garombello' Langhe Nebbiolo, made in a style for immediate gratification and great drinkability. Finally we will finish with their flagship Dolcetto, 'Papà Celso', named in memory of Celso Abbone, who planted every vine in the historic single vineyard the wine is made from. These wines are perfect for the beautiful weather we have had recently, and should make for a wonderful tasting experience.
